BILL HEMBY

 

A MEMBER OF THE GEORGIA RACING HALL OF FAME

   Bill Hemby was from Smyrna, Georgia. He raced throughout the southeast, including Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Mobile.

   Bill Hemby started racing in 1952 and drove for 25 years .He holds the track record at the long gone Peach Bowl Speedway.

.   In 1965 he won the points championship at Boyds Speedway in Chattanooga in the supermodifieds.

   In 1968 he won the most money at Athens Speedway in the supers. They didn’t have a points system there that year

   Bill grew up with Jug Williams stepson. Jug was a big bootlegger in Atlanta and owned several race cars. That is how Bill got interested in the sport. Thanks to Harvey Jones, Bobby Young, N.R. champion , Henry Fields , Ed Coil, Ervin Hickman, Tommy Hickman, Paul Hickman, and many others for helping Bill to win lots of races.

   In 1969 Bill enjoyed driving in NASCAR’s Grand Touring division.

   He was inducted into the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in 2006.
